When Your Heart Breaks.

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve all been there. Our hearts have been broken in one way or another at some point in our lives. Maybe a friend betrayed your trust, or a boy stole your heart and filled you with lies. Maybe your father left your family, or you had to move to a new city and leave all of your friends behind. It happens. It’s unavoidable. So what should we do when our heart breaks?Recently, I have experienced a heartbreak of my own. It has been quite the roller coaster. More specifically, a roller coaster with too many drops. The kind that make your stomach jump into your throat. You know what I'm talking about. I feel like it will never end. But it will. I know, I know. You've heard it a thousand times. Everything will be okay. You will get through this, it just takes time. Right, that's great. But again, we ask the question. What do we dow when our heart breaks?Let yourself feel. It's never a good idea to hold it all in. Write your feelings on paper, even if they don't make sense. Find a friend that will listen and cry with you, tell them everything that is going on inside of your head. If you hold your feelings back, they will find a way to escape. And when they do, it's not going to be pretty.Pray. This is another piece of advice that we've heard a thousand times. But seriously, prayer is such a powerful thing. Being in the presence of God is so comforting. If you can't find anyone else to listen or understand, He's there. He gets it. When you feel broken and lost, He's walking with you.Treat yourself. Now, don't go crazy with this one. This is probably the best part of recovery. Go out and buy yourself some flowers to brighten up your bedroom. Cancel your afternoon plans to sit on your couch, wrap yourself up in blankets, and watch Gilmore Girls. Make the most beautiful ice cream sundae in existence. Anything that will give you the slightest bit of happiness.Remember that everything will be okay. God always has a plan for broken hearts. It may sound cheesy, but everything really does happen for a reason. It makes all of the tears bearable. Someday, when you get through this, you will be able to comfort others who go through the same suffering as you did. You will be able to understand people in new ways. All of it will be worth it, I promise. Keep your head up!words and photo by Lucy Boyland
